The previous two weeks we have watched as suspenseful and surprising episodes have led us excitedly towards this weeks season finale. While this season finale was not bad or disappointing, it was somewhat predictable with very little surprises and no crazy cliffhangers to keep us waiting anxiously for next season.
The episode starts immediately following the events from last week, where Shane reanimates and Carl is forced to kill him. So before I can move on, it has been bugging me since last week: As a a real person trained in firearms and I have shot many different types of guns, I can tell you as I have mentioned before that proficient use of handguns are not something that a normal person can quickly acclimate to, especially a small boy. There is no way that Carl would have been able to take down a walker with a single shot to the head with that .45 caliber pistol, and in reality he would be lucky to be able to keep the gun in his hand when firing it as the 1911 model .45 we was using has a pretty decent kick, but I digress. (He must have practiced out of scene last week, but that too is unlikely as they are running out of ammo)
So Rick and Carl start running back when they see the large hoard of walkers and they get to the barn and set it on fire to kill some walkers and create a distraction. Meanwhile back at the farm the hoard surprises the rest of gang as is they never imagined something like this would happen! WTF All that time sitting around the farm all those days and they never discussed a strategy or contingency plan? Just about everyone panic and they all scattered like roaches with the lights flipped on. Also all that time and they didn’t bother to re-enforce any of the vehicles as if they would never need to use them to escape a hoard of walkers! Oh well, little Jimmy paid the ultimate price for the gangs laziness as he was ripped from the RV and eaten after Daryl ordered him to drive the RV to the barn to save Rick.
After all the mayhem, things settle down and the survivors meet up back out on the highway. This is where rick tell Lori about how to had to kill Shane because Shane was going to kill him. Bi-polar Lori is once again angry at Rick (must be the honesty and decision making logic of survival) and this stuns Rick. He tells the rest of the group that everyone is infected as Jennings told him that at the CDC. They are a little pissed, but he also gives a hearty speech telling everyone to go on their own if they don’t like his decisions and that if they stay with him, it is no longer a democracy. The camera pans up and we see that the group is not far from a Prison. Now that would be a good place to hold up and secure themselves, and is also one of two elements from the original comic series that was revealed in this finale. The other element is a character named Michonne who we see as Andrea is fleeing on foot through the woods and being chased by walkers, exhausted she is overtaken by a zombie, and just as it looks like she will meet her end, the walker is sliced in half by a mysterious hooded stranger who has two walkers attached to him/her by chains with no arms or jaws. Pretty crazy stuff!
So I am sure we will see our group end up at the prison next season and more info will be revealed about Michonne, however readers of the comic do not need any more info as it is a popular character that the production team had previously confirmed would be in the TV series at some point. My lingering question is this: So everyone is infected, but does the infection cause any ill effects before the death of the person? Also one must speculate on how such a infection could nearly simultaneously infect the entire planet? Jennings told us that the French were closest to a cure, but then communication was lost. It was implied that the infection is worldwide and hope for a cure is futile. The odd thing is that Jennings stated that it was 194 days since Wildfire was declared way back in season one. It is odd for 2 reasons, first is that 194 days is longer than our group has been battling the walkers, so one must assume that these worldwide agencies were working on a cure for this plague before it became widespread. Second, due to how fast the plague spread, including worldwide infections, how is it possible for a simultaneous outbreak all across the globe? Is it God, Goverments, Aliens, or something else? Please chime in with you thoughts on the origins of the infection.
